Chances of Admission to Government Universities in Singapore: Between Junior College (JC) and Polytechnic

3 1

Admission to Singapore’s local autonomous universities is highly competitive. For instance, the acceptance rate for the National University of Singapore (NUS) ranges between 5% and 10%.

Universities tend to prefer Junior College (JC) graduates over Polytechnic graduates due to the GCE A-Level curriculum is academically rigorous and designed to prepare students for university education. Even if a JC student performs below average in their A-Levels, they may still have better chances of gaining admission compared to a Polytechnic graduate with above-average results. Statistics show that fewer than 30% of Polytechnic graduates gain entry into local universities. This is because Polytechnic programs focus on practical and vocational training, which may not align with universities that prioritize students with a strong academic foundation from A-Levels.

Regardless of the pathway chosen, students must meet the Mother Tongue Language requirement. For Thai students, this means passing the GCE O-Level Thai Mother Tongue examination.
