The Role of Thai Mother Tongue in O-Level L1R4 and L1R5 Calculations
Quote from admin on September 9, 2024, 2:00 pmThe O-Level secondary grading system in Singapore is crucial for determining a student's eligibility for further education in Junior College (JC), Millennia Institute (MI), Polytechnic, or Higher Nitec programs. Two primary grading systems are used: L1R5 and L1R4.
The L1R5 grading system is specifically designed for students aiming to enter JC or MI. In this system, L1 represents the score in either the English Language or a Higher Mother Tongue Language (HMTL), with the higher score being considered. R5 refers to the best five relevant subjects, excluding the one already used for L1. To ensure a balanced academic foundation, at least one of these subjects must be a Mathematics or Science subject, and another must be a Humanities subject. Students also have the option to include their Mother Tongue Language, such as Thai, Malay, or Tamil, as one of the relevant subjects in the R5 category. Importantly, to qualify for entry into JC or MI, students are required to study at least one Mother Tongue Language, including Thai, regardless of whether it is used in calculating their L1R5 score.
On the other hand, the L1R4 grading system is utilized for entry into Polytechnic or Higher Nitec programs. The structure is similar to that of L1R5, with L1 again representing the score in either English or HMTL. However, R4 consists of the best four relevant subjects, excluding the one used for L1. Just like in the L1R5 system, at least one of these subjects must be a Mathematics or Science subject, and one must be a Humanities subject. Additionally, the Mother Tongue Language can be included as one of the relevant subjects in the R4 category.
In summary, both the L1R5 and L1R4 systems ensure that students meet specific subject requirements, including the mandatory inclusion of a Mathematics/Science and a Humanities subject, to promote a well-rounded education. For JC or MI admission, the study of at least one Mother Tongue Language, such as Thai, is compulsory, even if it is not part of the final L1R5 calculation.
