It is normal to encounter failures, but you must be able to stand up each time you fall.
It is common for everyone to encounter failure in their lives. At times, it may just be a minor failure, but during other times, it may be more severe. There may be some who will encounter them time and again, but they never lose hope and will always attempt to stand up and continue to persevere. On the other hand, others will simply give up after facing failure once and never be able to stand up again in their lives.
During the first year Payu began to study in Singapore, he was not able to get good results for his exams. He would usually fail nearly all his subjects, except for Science and Maths. Despite sitting for his exams multiple times, his grades remained the same. I could no longer count how many times he had cried from getting bad results and not understanding his lessons.
I then gave Payu two choices for him to decide on his own and told him that once he had chosen, he could not change his mind again. The first option was that he would give in and return to Thailand, while the other option was for him to stand up and continue to persevere.
What are you fighting for? I had never advised Payu to fight against others, but instead, I taught him to stand up and fight against himself to overcome his laziness and the difficulty he had when it came to English, as well as the lack of discipline in him. I knew that it was only his first year, so if I were to compare him with other Singaporean students, he was definitely not fluent in English. Therefore, he had to work even harder than Singaporean students in order to study well.
It is alright and normal for one to fail. Since we have been born onto this Earth, there will definitely be a time where everyone will encounter failure. Sometimes, you fail like how ‘an ant fails,’ but able to stand up easily after that. However, there would be other times when you will fail like how ‘an elephant fails’ and may even feel pain physically and mentally. Then, what should you do?
If you were to fail and was not determined enough to stand up again, your future will then become unsuccessful, as you are unable to move forward in life anymore.
I told Payu that since he is my son, he has to endure and become stronger. Regardless of whether he will fail like how ‘an ant fails,’ or ‘an elephant fails,’ he has to attempt to stand up by himself. If his first attempt was unsuccessful, he has to persevere and continue to attempt until he becomes successful. Also, whenever he encounters an obstacle, he has to find alternative solutions to overcome the issue and become stronger than before.
It is not easy for people to live their lives, as they have to undergo many tests in life. Yet, there is always a solution to every problem. It may not be easy for one to figure it out at first, as you did not fully utilise your abilities. As such, you will fail repeatedly.
However, I have never told Payu that he ‘can’t fail,’ but instead, I always taught him that he has to stand up each time he fails.
