Giving the child the choice in choosing whether he likes to do.
I once had a dream of being a doctor, but it went down the drain. Also, I
had dreamt of Payu becoming a doctor. Even so, I never once forced him to study
what I wished for him to learn. So, I let him choose whatever he liked to study
because if we were to do something we do not like, we might still be able to do
it, but it would not be good enough. Also, it would not give us happiness.
Not being able to do it did not mean that we were stupid or unskillful, but it
might just mean that we are not meant to do it. Therefore, we might just not be
skilful or like it enough to do that.
If a monkey were to climb a tree, it could climb well and fast. On the other
hand, fish can only swim very well because it was meant to live in water. If it were
in the opposite situation, where the monkey and fish challenged each other in
climbing a tree, of course, the monkey would win because the monkey is an
expert and loves to climb trees. As for the fish, it could not climb the tree, so it
does not mean the fish is stupid or unskillful.
If they were to challenge each other in swimming, of course, the fish would
win because it is an expert and loves swimming. As for the monkey, it might be
able to swim, but it is just not good enough at it. (Kruu Kate does not know,
because I am not a monkey!) Therefore, it does not mean the monkey is stupid or
unskillful.
Due to the fact that we are born to be different, we do not have the same
likes and skills. Therefore, parents should not force their children to follow their
dreams. Since they are just humans and not robots, the children have their own
life, likes, skills and dreams.
If Payu were able to study whatever he wants, he could work as whatever
career he wants to become. Hence, he would be happier than to learn whatever
his parents force him to do. Not only that, he would be able to do it very well.
When he was young, Payu had ever asked me, “When Payu grows up, what do I
want Payu to become?” I answered, “I have always wanted to become a doctor,
but I was not able to make my dream come true. But you have to see what you
like to do and study whatever you like, then become whatever you want to be.
Don’t choose whatever I like, but instead, you must choose whatever you like.
Only then, Payu will be happy at doing whatever you like.”
