When Payu was young, I would always send and fetch him from school by car every day, and I always loved driving small Japanese cars. Since this school was a private school, there was another guardian who would drive his big, luxurious European automobile to send his child to school. At times, his nanny would join them as well.
Some would give loads of money to their children each day, but I always taught Payu to spend money wisely. That was why I would only give Payu 20 Baht to bring to school each day. Not only that, but I also told Payu that he should only spend what he had and not to borrow money from his friends or owe stores any money.
His friends would always boast that they live in a big luxurious house and travel overseas during school holidays.
One morning, it happened to be raining very heavily when I was sending Payu to school. On my way there, Payu saw other children dressed in uniform at the bus stop, while getting drenched from the rain. Even their bags were not able to escape from getting wet.
When the bus arrived, the bus seemed to be very crowded, so they had to stand throughout the entire journey. Some buses did not have any air-conditioning and would get stuck in traffic jams consistently, as well as the smoke emitted from car exhausts, caused all passengers to have a bad experience. Whereas, some students had to ride on their father’s motorcycle in the heavy rain.
On the other hand, some children did not have the opportunity to study in school, as they had to help their poor parents to collect and sell rubbish. Some did not even have a house to live in, while others did not have any money to buy food.
Hence, I would always point out and show Payu other people who were living a much harder life than him. In comparison, even though Payu had to take a smaller car, the cold air-con was still working. He did not have to get wet from the rain and would be brought to his destination safely. Payu might have a smaller house than that of his friends, but his home was more comfortable to live in. Although Payu might not travel to America or Europe during school holidays, we would still travel to nearby places, which gave us happiness and memories.
That would allow Payu to understand the happiness in our lives without having to compare to others’ lives.
